We’re all going to have them, those days where, for whatever reason we’re tired. On those days in particular it seems extra hard to pull ourselves together and keep the smile on our faces.
With the temperatures jumping from 3 degrees up to 70 in a matter of a few days I thought I was back in Michigan again. My sinuses didn’t respond as well as I would have liked and I was feeling pretty miserable. Add in a rude guest or two and you’ve got a recipe for disaster!
The morning was fairly slow… steady, but slow. I was able to get a jump start on some administrative things I had been working on as the traffic picked up so did the rudeness of the guests. We’re not talking about anything out of the normal (though I’m sure those blogs will come at some point) because let’s just face it, people can be rude!
By the time the other manager clocked in that afternoon I was struggling to make it. I’m just going to be honest… the weather, my mind, my body; when I added it together I didn’t know if I was going to make it until 4:15pm.
The smile that was on the face of the other front end manager when they clocked in and made their way up to the front was incredible. It was refreshing – a breath of fresh air! I thought I might be able to hold on! The second string brought NEW LIFE to the tired first string! It encouraged me, challenged me and made me be better for my last few hours!
Proverbs 17:22 says “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
Oh man, was that ever true. What a difference an attitude can make. I was challenged in that moment to continue to adjust my attitude and try to be cheerful. Unfortunately I’m not perfect and I haven’t always succeeded, nevertheless I press on!
And while we might not be able to choose the external circumstances which influence the events of our daily lives, in Christ we have the ability to remove ourselves from the situation and choose our response to it. Isn’t that what He did on a daily basis? Dying to ourselves isn’t just saying “no” to sin, but choosing instead to live a life reflective of Him.
We have the power to influence the people all around us every day. We have the opportunity to show the world that Christians aren’t the most miserable people on the planet, living out their miserable existence underneath a burden of harsh rules and regulations that Christ is “forcing” upon His followers.
The outcome of our circumstances change when we make a decision not to let short-term stimuli influence long-term opportunity.
And that’s right on target.
Thanks for joining me today on T-Time, have a great day all you cheerful people!
