Which is easier, rolling a ball down a hill or trying to sustain its rolling?
Momentum (“p”) is the product of an object’s mass (“m”) multiplied by its velocity (“v”); p = mv. To create momentum, initial force is required and it is something we are all trying to create or sustain.
Perhaps you’ve lost a job and are trying to gain some momentum in your job search. Maybe you have a great job and are trying to sustain the momentum you’ve worked hard to achieve. Maybe creating momentum means creating a new website or logo; “re-branding” your product. Some of us try to create momentum by making “up-front” promises to people we work with (or for), but regardless of what you are doing to create momentum, it will still require a significant amount of startup if you wish to sustain its forward motion.
While initial startup may be time consuming (and in some cases very costly), an object’s power is directly related to its sustained momentum. Anyone can pay someone to design a new logo or flood an office false promises (no matter how well intentioned may have been), trying to create the initial energy required to get the ball rolling, but a logo and a promise do not sustain momentum. The challenge comes in harnessing tangible ways to sustain forward motion before it is depleted.
Businesses, corporations, sports franchises, bands, shopping retailers and churches are all striving to sustain forward motion, but what then is the key to maintaining it? Change.
Flexibility is not only a key to strength in the human body, but the key to a healthy organization. We must be willing to maintain our flexibility as an organizations or individuals if we wish to sustain the momentum we have already achieved. Creatively changing to meet the diversified needs of cliental, consumers and our surroundings is essential to the organization or individual’s survival.
Change does not mean compromise, though it may be the most common misconception surrounding the idea of change and flexibility. Our ability to adapt our methodology without changing our message is what separates good from great.
Do not fear change, even when it stretches you. Use discernment, seek wise counsel and pray. Rely upon the strength of the people God’s placed around you when you ca no longer rely on yourself. Be humble, be stretched, be flexible… SUSTAIN MOMENTUM.
