I love the movie “The Sword and the Stone” because it’s so stinkin’ funny! Merlin & Wart tag-team in the kind of classic hilarity brought to life in Disney’s golden era under Walt’s personal direction in this1963 classic. I think one of my favorite parts is when they turn into squirrels. After watching the SNEAK PREVIEW OF ICE AGE 3 yesterday and watching Scrat’s acorn adventures, I got to thinking… if squirrels bury acorns and acorns turn into oak trees, then in oak trees owe a lot to the furry little rodents that inhabit their branches.
It made me wonder about the ideas we have ourselves. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it seems like I have about a thousand good ideas bouncing around inside of me, yet I never quite seem to be able to bring half of them to completion. When that discouraging reality sets in, I think we need to take our cue from the squirrels.
Take some of your ideas and bury them. Put them down in a notebook or in a Word document, buried safely in a place that only you know about. You might look at the random patterns of behavior the squirrel has, but despite their appearance, they take time to pick up acorns AND take mental notes of where they are leaving them for later.
Some of your ideas won’t materialize. Sometimes they’ll be forgotten, even misplaced. They might even begin growing into something else entirely on their own. No matter what the case, the acorns that squirrels bury NOW will help them make it through a different season LATER.
What acorns have you buried? Do you still know where they are? What acorns are you holding on to that might be better off safely stored beneath the ground now for a different season later?
